Seed thoughts for inspiration on group consciousness

In reflecting on group consciousness we can draw inspiration from many sources such as poetry, philosophers and musicians.

Here are a selection that spoke to us but please share others that for you can enable us to more deeply explore ‘group consciousness’

It is one thing to reason abstractly about the distant worlds, and it is another thing to realize oneself as a participant there. Only they who have not closed for themselves the path to beauty can understand how near to them the distant worlds (eons) are!

It is better to go to God as a community — a group of like-minded people united by a common higher aspiration.

It is possible that the next Buddha will not take the form of an individual. The next Buddha may take the form of a community, a community practicing understanding and loving kindness, a community practicing mindful living. And the practice can be carried out as a group, as a city, as a nation.
Thich Nhat Hhan, “The next Buddha may be a Sangha” in Inquiring Mind, vol 10, No.2, Spring 1994

When you sing with a group of people, you learn how to subsume yourself into a group consciousness because a Capella singing is all about the immersion of the self into the community. That’s one of the great feelings – to stop being me for a little while and to become us. That way lies empathy, the great social virtue.’ Brian Eno Musician

And this beautiful poem by Sri Aurobindo that describes group consciousness from the individual perspective through unity with all things…

Poem

I have wrapped the wide world in my wider self

And Time and Space my spirit’s seeing are.

I am the god and demon, ghost and elf,

I am the wind’s speed and the blazing star.

All Nature is the nursling of my care,

I am its struggle and the eternal rest;

The world’s joy thrilling runs through me, I bear

The sorrow of millions in my lonely breast.

I have learned a close identity with all,

Yet am by nothing bound that I become;

Carrying in me the universe’s call

I mount to my imperishable home.

I pass beyond Time and life on measureless wings,

Yet still am one with born and unborn things.

Sri Aurobindo
